I always think of Autumn as a new beginning as it’s been a new beginning for most of us every year since we were 5 and started our school career, then continued for the next 50 or so years when we completed our school career. Autumn, is the end of, harvest, gardening, outdoor activities, and lovely long days of sunshine. Now new activities, programs, and classes are starting at senior centres, Yara, the pool, and hockey arenas. Organizations are calling their members back to meetings. There are so many opportunities for us… we just have to sign up and walk out our doors.

I just finished an interesting book called Die With Zero, Getting All You Can From Your Money And Your Life by Bill Perkins. It’s a provocative philosophy and practical guide on how to get the most out of your money- and out of your life. It’s intended for those who place experiences far ahead of simply making money for one’s so-called golden years. It’s a wake-up call to accumulate experiences before it’s too late. When we had better health, we had no time nor a lot of money, now we have lots of time, some money, and more issues with our health. Use your money now to create life experiences, go to the places you’ve always wanted to see, visit family and friends, and do what you can now, to accumulate your life dreams and experiences.

With that thought in mind, Dianne’s article offers a great perspective and suggestions on how to stay mentally healthy. (Part 1 was in our last newsletter). Plus, Dave has some great travel ideas and newsletters available for us, from traveling solo to small group adventures. If you aren’t ready for a journey, watch Dave's entertaining travel videos.

Did you know that when you are travelling outside of your Province, a follow-up visit to a medical facility or doctor after a legitimate travel health claim, MAY NOT be covered as it would not be considered a medical emergency? You should ALWAYS call the Blue Cross 1-800 number on the back of your Blue Cross card to confirm your coverage for any travel-related claims.

For example, say, you broke your leg and go to a medical facility, you would be covered. The doctor says I’d like to see you for a checkup in 2 weeks - that checkup would not be covered as it is not a medical emergency. You should head back home if you need further follow-ups. Remember when traveling always call the Blue Cross 1-800 number first and they will let you know about your coverage in any circumstance including eligibility for coverage.

Dianne Newman Our Mental Health Part 2

A friend and I were discussing how unmotivated we had become with activities we used to enjoy. She asked if I thought it was a sign of depression. As she was a teacher and counselor, this was a familiar topic for us. My first response was, “No, I don’t think so.” But after some thought, I wondered if maybe, in a way, it is. I realize I can no longer do the things I once did, and I now ask for help with tasks I used to handle on my own. I feel a sense of loss at times, maybe even grieving that loss. However, I'm grateful for these thought-provoking conversations with friends.

As I explored mental wellness further, I realized many seniors face similar challenges. Fortunately, there are resources available, like the Canadian Coalition for Seniors Mental Health (ccsmh.ca), which offers brochures on anxiety and depression, and wellnessapp.ca to help set goals and motivate us. Our physicians, community programs, and drug plans like Blue Cross also provide support.

We need to remember to reach out to family, friends, and colleagues, and prioritize our mental health.
