Message From Your Local Branch President

It’s been a rollercoaster month for those of us with yards to care for. We’ve gone from trying to plant, planting, looking at snow on the ground, shoveling the deck, basking in the heat, to trying to clean yards, prepare soil, planting gardens, pot flowers…all at once. I heard a person talking to a friend the other day, and she said, “I give up. I’m going camping instead.” Maybe take a heater along, just in case. As I’ve been driving out of town, I’ve also seen the greening of the crops. Spring must have finally arrived.

However, digging in the dirt is wonderfully therapeutic! I also discovered a new little flower in my favourite greenhouse in Saskatoon. The Hi-Way Greenhouse on 11th Street will have their half-price sale within the next 10 days—if you happen to be in the city.

Thank you to the Moose Jaw Chapter delegates who attended the Provincial AGM in Saskatoon in mid-May. This was a very informative few days with interesting sessions as well as business involving elections and resolutions. We were well represented, and the entire assembly of over 200 delegates was the envy of a guest speaker from the Maritimes who rarely sees delegations of this size. This demonstrates the devotion of our superannuated teachers who rally together to address issues related to improving the health and lifestyle of our retirees.

One more reminder: Please remember to use your Health Spending Account. If you are unsure about how to use it, call the Blue Cross Office; they can access your file and assist you. The number is 306-667-6853; office hours are 9-4 Monday to Friday.

Our STS group benefits plan uses the Saskatchewan Formulary as its list of eligible prescription drugs.

In practical terms:

• Regular Formulary drugs: Covered according to the plan's rules when prescribed and dispensed appropriately.
• Exception Drug Status (EDS) drugs: Not automatically covered. Your physician or pharmacist must apply for EDS approval through the provincial process. Once approved, a copy of the approval letter must be sent to Saskatchewan Blue Cross before coverage can be provided.
• Special Authorization drugs: These require an additional authorization process through Saskatchewan Blue Cross. A specific form must be completed and submitted for review before coverage is approved.

The key point is that a prescription being written by your doctor does not automatically mean it will be covered. The drug must:
1. Be listed on the Saskatchewan Formulary, and
2. Meet any EDS or Special Authorization requirements if applicable.
