Hello Everyone, I’m not writing much. Just sending a shout out from all of us, to our fellow superannuate Shirley Bowler, wishing her A Happy 105 Birthday.

Check out Shirley’s article in this newsletter. I thoroughly enjoyed it and know you will as well. I had a headful of questions and wanted to read more about her life and experiences. I appreciate Shirley and her son Dave and Nora taking the time to put this together for us. Enjoy!

Shirley Bowler Turns 105!

I was born on a farm south of the town of Briercrest on December 8, 1919. My Parents (Eugene & Getrude Peachey) homesteaded in the same area. In a few weeks I will be 105.

I became a teacher because that was the cheapest thing I could do after high school. I attended Normal School in Moose Jaw 1940-41.

I took my first job at Clinton School (near the present-day Filtration Plant) in the fall of 1941. Tuxford was the nearest town. I was there for two years and boarded with Nettie and George Fowler who lived near the school.

I married Joe, a flight instructor from England in 1943. We lived for a short time in Assiniboia where I subbed for 2 months. Joe was posted back to England, and I followed in 1944. I taught in England for 8 months until my first child (Gene) was born.

After the War our family returned to Canada and took up residence in Moose Jaw. I substitute taught in Moose Jaw in 1957 and was hired to Teach at William Grayson school in 1958. In 1972 I moved to Palliser Heights and taught there until my retirement in 1979. I taught grades 7,8 and 9.

I enjoyed my life on the farm in my early years but my marriage to Joe who died in 1997 brought me the most joy in my life and raising my family was the most satisfying part of my life. I also enjoyed teaching.

Historically two events impacted my life. World War II in the 1940s and the depression in the 1930s. Two happy events in my life were my honeymoon in Banff and a family holiday in Hawaii in 1985.

Values that have been important to me are truth, honesty and caring. When I taught grade 8s my goal was to get them ready for grade 9 so they wouldn’t drop out.

The best pieces of advice I received were from my mother “don’t try to be like everybody else – just be yourself” and from a principal in England, Miss Hart “good, kind, firm discipline is essential in teaching.”
