When winter descends upon us, it is easy to say this can be a hard season. It can be hard for many reasons. We may ask where the time has gone and why autumn was so short. The Christmas holidays came and went, often a stressful and even lonely time. Winter is dark and cold and the weather is ever changing—particularly this winter. Despite our misgivings and inner thoughts about why on earth we live in this climate, there are blessings that winter brings. The outdoor enthusiasts enjoy snowshoeing, skiing, sledding, snowmobiling, ice fishing, and often just walking in the white wonderland of newly fallen snow. The Christmas traditions with family and the beauty of light displays linger on well into January. We have weathered the extreme deepfreeze where we complained about the weather but I read a comment recently that said, “It’s not the weather—you’re just dressed wrong.” I do hope many of us have been partaking in the activities at Yara and Eaton’s Senior Centre because the moody swings of weather have provided us with yet another layer of ice on our sidewalks and walking paths. When it’s too cold to venture out, my winter becomes soup-making season and my freezer now has enough cartons to last til July…
